I have to say my copy of this album doesn't sound that bad. I have a little bit of crackling, but honestly, not too much that it would really bother me. The picture albums themselves look fantastic. I ultimately bough this album to frame, so I'm not overly concerned with sound quality, but if I ever felt the need to listen to it I wouldn't be annoyed about it.

Agreed with a previous post that the surface noise really is annoying on the quiet passages on such beautiful songs. A lot of the music during this MJ era was done on drum machines, computer generated music, etc. so you won't get the beautiful vinyl warmth and sound that we loved on his previous albums from the Quincy Jones era. Sound quality is still fine overall. But still a must have for any collection for MJ fans.

As far as picture discs go, this release is about as good as you can get. Naturally, there is a constant hiss of surface noise, but it fades into the background once each track starts. The noise more or less disappears even during the quiet parts of songs and you're only reminded of it during the time between tracks. Otherwise, my copy has pretty much no pops and clicks even right out of the package. There is a surprising amount of clarity and depth to the music for being a picture disc, which makes it all very listenable and enjoyable. Hopefully there will eventually be a proper reissue of this underrated album. But, in the meantime, this picture disc is the next best thing to spending half a million dollars on an original 1995 pressing.

The worst thing about this issued on picture disc besides the price is the fact they edited They don't care about us...but left the F word on Scream. I'm glad I still have my original CD not edited...before everyone started crying.

My copy of this is atrocious. So much surface noise! "Earth Song" and "Childhood" are practically unlistenable. Why they couldn't give these albums a proper reissue is beyond me. Also, it should be pointed out that this version has the edited "They Don't Care About Us", and the alternate orchestral intro to "HIStory".

this thing is mostly quiet, even close in some parts to other non picture vinyl i own, and i am talking about quiet parts as well like the stranger in moscow intro, when most of the songs full kick in u forget it audibly is a picture disc. IMO the bigger downside to this edition is the censoring which is not the worst thing ever either, MJ doesnt curse that much, maybe the outer sleeve is not that great, but meh, i can work with that. Would recommend it to anyone wanting this album on vinyl except to the higher purists. (i am listening through elac ub5s, cart is nagaoka mp110, preamp schiit mani and amp is a pioneer elite lx302 a/v receiver).
